Survival Guide for Your First Week in Melbourne

|

Arriving in Melbourne as an international student brings a mix of new experiences, from unfamiliar places to meeting new people and adjusting to a different lifestyle. To help you settle in smoothly, we’ve put together a survival guide with everything you need to do in your first week. Follow these steps, and you’ll feel at home in no time!

Get Your Transport Sorted

Melbourne’s public transport system is super convenient, but you’ll need a Myki card to get around. You can buy one at train stations, some tram stops, or 7-Eleven stores. If you’re a student, apply for a Myki concession to get discounted fares—it’ll save you a lot in the long run! Once you have your card, download the PTV app to check tram, train, and bus schedules in real time. And remember, trams are free in the CBD, no need to tap on and off!

Set Up Your Phone

Avoid expensive roaming charges by getting an Australian SIM card as soon as you arrive. Major providers like Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone offer prepaid and postpaid plans with good student deals. Compare data and call packages before choosing one that suits your needs.

Open a Bank Account

Having an Australian bank account makes paying rent, groceries, and bills so much easier. The big four banks all offer student accounts with no monthly fees. You’ll need your passport, visa, and Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to open an account. Once it’s set up, activate internet banking and a debit card for easy transactions. Some banks even let you open an account online before arriving—check if that option is available for you!

Sort Out Your Essentials

Now that you’ve arrived, it’s time to get the basics for your new place! Whether you’re living in a student accommodation or renting privately, you might need bedding, kitchenware, and storage solutions. Budget-friendly stores like Kmart, Target, and Big W have everything you need. For groceries, head to Coles, Woolworths, or Aldi for fresh food and household items. If you’re looking for affordable second-hand furniture, check Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree.

Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)

If you’re planning to work while studying, you’ll need a Tax File Number (TFN) to get paid properly and avoid higher tax rates. You can apply for it online through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website—it’s free and takes about 10-28 days to process. Remember to keep your TFN safe—it’s an important personal document, and you’ll need it for all future jobs in Australia.

Explore Your New Neighborhood

One of the best ways to start feeling at home is by exploring your local area. Take a walk around your neighborhood to find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, post office, and public transport stops. If you’re living in the city, check out Melbourne’s iconic laneways, cafés, and markets—there’s always something happening!

Make Friends & Get Involved

Feeling a bit lonely in your first week? Don’t worry—it’s completely normal! The best way to make new friends is to join student groups, attend social events, or explore Melbourne’s international student communities. Many universities have clubs for different interests, nationalities, and hobbies, so don’t be afraid to get involved!

Your first week in Melbourne might feel tough, but take it one step at a time! Getting your essentials sorted early will help you settle in and start enjoying your new adventure. And remember, Melbourne is an incredibly welcoming city—so take a deep breath, explore, and make the most of your time here!
