International Students: What to Do as Soon as You Arrive

|

If you’ve just arrived in Melbourne, it’s pretty common to feel overwhelmed and confused on what you should do to prepare for your life in a new city. You’re moving to a whole new country after all! Here are some things that you need to settle as soon as you arrive.

Open a Bank Account

This is probably the most important thing to do as you will need an Australian Bank Account to make your life here easier. You should research which bank you like to open an account with, but you can also go for Australia’s big banks like ANZ, Commonwealth or Westpac. Make sure you bring along your Student ID, Passport, copy of your Visa, Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) or other documents you might need.

Set up your Mobile Number

This is also another priority especially after you land, because you want to avoid those international roaming charges. There are many mobile providers you can choose from, like Telstra, Optus or Vodafone. Always make sure you research the prices, data inclusions, and their International Student offers!

Get a Myki

Your Myki pass is your main transport card in Melbourne. Buying a Myki as soon as you arrive allows you to use all public transport – buses, trams, and trains with ease. You can buy Myki cards at train stations, some tram stops, or at 7-Eleven stores. Since you’re an International Student, you’ll likely be eligible for student cards. Make sure you do your research so you can save some money on transport!

Apply for Tax File Number

If you’re planning to work while you study, you will need to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN). TFN is your personal reference number that identifies you in the tax and superannuation system. Most employers will ask you for this number before you start work, so make sure you apply for it so you can start working as soon as possible!

Explore the Area

One last important thing you need to do to settle yourself in Melbourne is to explore the area! Take a walk around where you live to find out where the closest convenience store, or grocery store is. It’s also good to figure out where the closest place to eat is so you know where to go when you’re feeling too lazy to cook. If you need kitchen essentials, or just new decorations for your room, the best option is to go to Kmart or BIG W, you should have lots of options to choose from.

Doing all these things within your first week of arriving in Melbourne can be really helpful so when Uni starts, you can concentrate on your studies and work! It’s always good to do some research, especially on the Bank or the Mobile providers before you arrive so you’re all ready!
