What to Pack for Your First Time Moving Abroad as an International Student?

|

Moving abroad for the first time is an exciting adventure, but packing? With limited luggage space and so much to think about, it can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry—we’ve got your back! Here are the must-haves to start your new chapter with ease.

Important Documents

Your passport and visa are must-haves, but there are a few other important documents you shouldn’t forget. Bring a printed copy of your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), health and travel insurance details, and accommodation contract. It’s also useful to have emergency contact numbers written down, just in case. You can also make multiple copies of all essential documents and store them in different places to have backups ready!

Clothes for All Seasons

Melbourne is known for having “four seasons in a day,” so packing versatile clothing is key. Bring comfortable everyday outfits, a few formal pieces for important events, and layering essentials like sweaters and a light jacket.

Electronics & Gadgets

Your laptop and phone will be your best companions for studying, staying in touch, and exploring your new city. Make sure you get an Australian SIM card as soon as you arrive. Also, don’t forget chargers, power adapters (Australia uses Type I plugs), and a portable power bank for long days out. If you need extra tech gear, stores like JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks offer student discounts, so consider buying certain gadgets after you arrive.

Personal Cares

It’s good to pack enough toiletries to last you a couple of weeks, especially if you have specific skincare or haircare products you prefer. Bring travel-sized essentials like toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant for the first few days. If you take prescription medication, pack enough supply for at least a month and bring a doctor’s note for customs clearance.

Money & Banking

Managing your finances is an important part of settling into a new country. While you may arrive with some local currency to cover immediate expenses like transport or food, setting up an Australian bank account should be a top priority. Major banks like ANZ, Commonwealth, NAB, and Westpac offer student accounts with low or no fees, making them a great choice. You’ll need to provide your passport, student visa, and proof of enrollment to open an account.

A Touch of Home

Homesickness is real, but bringing a little piece of home can help! Pack small items that bring you comfort, like a favorite snack, a photo album, or a small keepsake. Having something familiar in your new space can make it feel cozier and help you settle in faster.

And Don’t Forget to Pack Smart

Packing smart means focusing on the essentials and leaving room for new experiences. Don’t stress too much about bringing everything—many things can be bought once you arrive. Now that your bags are ready, it’s time to embrace this new adventure!
